ULTRASOUND

A Sonogram or an Ultrasound examination uses sound waves, not X-rays to image tissues within your body. This test is performed by a technologist who is skilled in using Ultrasound equipment and a Radiologist specialized in doing Sonograms and an expert in interpreting the final results.

Preparing for Your Sonogram........

Gallbladder Sonogram
  • Fat free evening meal
  • Nothing to eat or drink after 11:00 pm until your exam is complete.

Kidney Sonogram

  • You may eat, but are required to drink 1 large glass of water 1 hour before your appointment.

Liver, Spleen, Pancreas and Aorta Sonogram

  • Nothing to eat or drink after 11:00 pm until your exam is complete.

Please arrive at the hospital 15 minutes before your appointment. Your examination usually will take less than an hour, but it is wise to allow at least 1 hour for your visit.

An Abdominal Sonogram is Simple and Painless
For your exam, you will be asked to remove your clothing and wear a hospital gown.
You will lie on a stretcher and warm oil will be applied to your abdomen.

Images of your liver, gallbladder, kidneys, etc., are displayed on a video screen and recorded.
While this is being done, you may be asked to hold your breath or take in a deep breath, to aid in obtaining the best possible image for evaluation.

When the technologist has completed the initial exam, you will be asked to wait until the films are developed and reviewed by the Radiologist. The Radiologist may come into the room and take a few additional pictures.

Completion of the Sonogram
By relaxing and following instructions, you will add to the success of your examination. Remember, a Sonogram is painless. The results of your examination will be sent to your doctor and your films will be kept on file at the hospital as part of your permanent record. If you have not heard from your doctor within one week of your examination, you should contact him/her directly to discuss the findings.
